Computers connected to the Internet identify each other using numerical IP addresses, which are very difficult for humans to remember. A Domain Name is an easy-to-remember Internet address in plain alphabet (such as "dspoon.com") which is translated automatically into the IP address.

Registry
The registry is a database that contains all the information for domain names. When you type a domain name in your browser, a request is sent to the registry to verify if the domain exists. If it does, the registry will send the path to your computer for your web browser to connect to the website, all done in seconds.

SMTP

At the moment there are not enough IP addresses for every computer, so there are 2 types of IP addresses assigned. A dynamic IP address is an address that is temporarily assigned to your computer while you are on the internet. A static IP address is an address that is permanently assigned. With an IP address, you can connect to other computers on the internet.

Web Hosting

The Web host will assign an IP address for your domain name and they will store your website content on their servers. When someone types in your domain, the request goes to the registry which has a record of the connection path to reach your website.
